Overview

✨ Hi! I’m glad you found this README. My hope is that it serves as a quick overview of how we might work together. You’ll find a little bit of my style, quirks, and values embedded below. Thank you for your time in reading this before our first 1-1.

  • This is a starting point, and is in no way a substitute for the time we have with each other.

Cheatsheet

⚡ If you don’t have a lot of time, I’d like you to take a few things away:

  • I’m here to support you and to help grow your career.
  • I will always make time for you. Don’t feel like you have to wait for our 1-1’s.
  • Person of the moment: I will give you my undivided attention when we’re together… I ask the same from you.
  • I will assume best intent… I ask the same from you.

About Me

  • I value communication, openness, respect, humor, and honesty.
  • I’m a lifelong learner, which means I appreciate feedback.
    • I also take a lot of notes. Currently using Obsidian and I love it.
  • I strive to have a high do-to-say ratio:
    • If I tell you I’m going to do something, I’m going to do everything I can to follow through in a timely fashion.
  • I ask a lot of questions:
    • It comes from a good place :D. I want to make sure I have an understanding on the topic.
    • I try to never ask leading questions, so please try not to read in to them too much.
    • They are to spark conversations, I don’t want you to feel because I have a Manager title it’s to get my way on a given topic.

My Goal(s)

  • Help create conditions for you to be successful.
  • I want you to trust me, and I understand I will have to earn it.

1-1’s

  • We’ll have a bi-weekly 30 minute conversation.
    • But remember what I said in the cheatsheet, I will always make more time for you.
  • What’s going well? What’s bugging you? Is there anything I can do to unblock you?
  • We’ll set up a shared google doc to help guide our conversations.
  • We will go through your agenda first and if time permits I will always have some questions. First and foremost these meetings are for you.

Our First 1-1

  • I will make you aware of the company’s career progressions.
    • See something you want to work towards?
  • Some questions:
    • In what medium (Slack, email, in person, etc.) do you prefer to receive feedback?
    • When do you prefer to receive feedback—routinely in 1:1s, or as-it-happens?
    • How do you prefer to receive recognition—publicly or privately?
    • What makes 1:1s the most valuable for you?
    • What are your goals for the next three months?
    • What do you need from your manager?
    • What do you need from your teammates?
    • What’s your favorite way to treat yourself?

What I Expect from You

  • Foster communication and collaboration:
    • We thrive as a team when we’re all communicating effectively.
    • Practice straight talk and radical candor.
    • I expect you to help others with a problem when they need it.
  • Assume best intent:
    • It’s hard to gauge tone when working remotely.
    • Assume the person you are dealing with is a professional, who is doing their best work.
    • Assume the problem is a break down in process, not the failure of an individual.
  • Take ownership:
    • You have all the capabilities to lead. It doesn’t matter what your role is.
    • Improve how we work or a part of the code base, and always ensure quality in what we do.
  • I expect you to receive and process feedback in a constructive way.
